(26-04-23) MOGADISHU – Abdirahman Hussein Wehliye, who sold a government-owned truck for $12,500 during the collapse of the country’s central government, has taken an extraordinary step to return the funds to the current government as the country continues to rebuild.
Wehliye, a former member of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation sold the truck when there was no functioning government in place to handle the asset. He later moved abroad amidst the turmoil and conflict that plagued Somalia for years.
Recently, Wehliye returned to his homeland and decided to repay the money from the sale of the truck, recognising it as a national asset that should be returned to the government. In a demonstration of integrity and commitment to his nation, Wehliye handed over the $12,500 directly to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation in the presence of government officials.
His actions have been praised by both the government and fellow citizens, who see Wehliye’s decision as a sign of hope for the future and an example for others to follow. By returning the proceeds from the sale of the national property, Abdirahman Hussein Wehliye is fostering trust in the government and playing a small but significant role in helping to rebuild Somalia.
As Somalia continues its journey towards stability and development, acts like Wehliye’s show that its citizens are willing to take responsibility for their past actions and contribute to a brighter future for their nation.
