(21-05-23) MOGADISHU – The Somali Minister of Defence, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, has issued a grave warning against those sympathising with Al-Shabaab, amidst increasing criticisms of the government’s strategy in tackling the militant group.

On Saturday, speaking from Kampala, Uganda, Minister Nur unequivocally addressed politicians he believes are indirectly supporting Al-Shabaab, cautioning the public against being misled by these figures, some of whom occupy positions within government agencies.

“Whether it’s the ordinary man on the street or someone entrusted with power if their objective aligns with those of Alshabab in the field, the Somali people must not be led astray,” Minister Nur firmly stated.

In an interview with Halqabsi News, Somali political analyst, Siraj Abdi, backed the Minister’s sentiments. “The public must remain vigilant against individuals who, knowingly or unknowingly, further Alshabab’s cause. It’s imperative to identify and reject any propaganda that undermines our fight against terrorism.”

“The battle continues, and war by its nature is tough and fraught with casualties. We yearn for its conclusion. For eight months, we’ve stood firm on this path. If we don’t sacrifice for our cause, we will be the ones to suffer. Negotiation is off the table,” declared Minister Nur.

Dr Rahma Abdi, a Security Studies lecturer at Simad University, told Halqabsi News, “This message is not just a stern warning but a call to unity for the Somali people. The public, politicians, and agencies need to stand together in the face of terrorism. Only then can we hope to bring an end to this conflict.”

In his speech, Minister Nur emphasised the necessity of scrutinising political propaganda that veers in favour of Al-Shabaab. He further reiterated that such distractions would not hinder the ongoing war against the militant group.
