(19-05-23) MOGADISHU – The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has urged the global community to fully fund the $7 billion appeal at the upcoming UN Horn of Africa Pledging Conference. This crucial meeting is set to determine funding for the region grappling with an alarming food security crisis, affecting over 21 million people.

“Mere months ago Somalia was on the brink of famine. The drivers of hunger are still very much present. The IRC calls for the full funding of the regional humanitarian appeals,” said David Miliband, President and CEO of the IRC. The funding deficit of these appeals is currently at a concerning 77%.

The IRC is pushing for an overhaul in famine response and prevention measures, with a focus on early warning systems and anticipatory action. This approach was successfully tested in Nigeria, where cash transfers helped households preemptively combat the effects of a predicted generational flood.

Moreover, the IRC is championing innovative, community-driven solutions such as a simplified treatment protocol for malnourished children. This protocol, utilising a single peanut paste product delivered by community health workers, has seen success in a recent study in Mali.

Climate resilience and adaptation are also key components of the IRC’s call. Miliband highlighted the necessity of long-term investments in climate-resilient agriculture and diversified livelihoods.

The IRC’s call comes at a critical juncture ahead of next week’s conference, urging decisive commitment from the international community to help secure a resilient future for the Horn of Africa.
