(08-05-23) BORAMA – Tensions continue to escalate in Boorama, a town in the Awdal region under Somaliland control, as violent demonstrations erupted on Monday. The protests come after the killing of Deputy Navy Commander Khadar Mohamed Aynanshe last week. Four people were injured in the protests when Somaliland police opened fire on the crowd.
An irate assembly of people gathered in the city centre, expressing their outrage over the death of Commander Aynanshe and demanding justice. Protesters chanted, “We don’t want clan government,” while waving the Somali flag. The demonstrators called for the accused, Dable Ahmed Abdi Abdillahi, to be imprisoned and sentenced to death. Abdillahi allegedly killed Commander Khadar in Lawyocaddo on Wednesday last week.
The people of Boorama have vowed not to cease their demonstrations until the execution of the death sentence against Dable Ahmed Abdi is carried out. The tension generated by this issue is palpable throughout Somaliland, with many citizens demanding the swift prosecution of those responsible for the killing.
Comparisons have been drawn between the current unrest in Boorama and previous incidents of violence in Lasaanood, which also stemmed from rebellion following murders in the city. The situation in Lasaanood has since escalated into outright conflict.
Somaliland faces several ongoing challenges, including the conflict in Lasaanood and political disputes surrounding the election of its administration. The recent outbreak of violence in Boorama adds another layer of complexity to the already precarious situation in the region. The international community, as well as local authorities, must work towards finding a peaceful resolution to these issues and preventing further bloodshed.
