(22-05-23) MOGADISHU – Somalia’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Salim Maow Haji, has resigned from his position, sparking controversy within the Somali government. Amb. Haji, who has served since October 2021, announced his resignation following a series of unprofessional incidents at the 32nd meeting of the Arab League in Jeddah.
In a public statement, Haji accused Hinda Ulosow, President Mohamud’s Chief of Protocol, of displaying disrespectful and insulting behaviour towards him. Despite reporting these issues to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Haji expressed disappointment in the lack of intervention, which ultimately contributed to his decision to resign.
“The treatment I experienced was unacceptable,” said Haji in his resignation letter. “This kind of disrespectful behaviour from the President’s Chief of Protocol goes against all diplomatic norms.”
Further complaints involved a perceived systematic blockade from the President, including allegations that his official access card was handed over to the President’s daughter, as independently confirmed by various news sources. This decision has been criticized as undermining the integrity of the Somali representation in the international arena.
Despite the brewing controversy, President Mohamud addressed the summit, highlighting Somalia’s progress and government priorities. These include enhanced anti-terrorism operations, Somali Army readiness, and the achievement of Somalia’s debt relief goals. Yet, the diplomatic crisis instigated by the Ambassador’s abrupt departure threatens to overshadow these critical issues.
Commenting on the situation, Abdullahi Aden Kulane, a member of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, called for immediate intervention by the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs. “The circumstances surrounding Amb. Haji’s resignation is extremely unfortunate. It is crucial that we conduct an inquiry and submit a report to the house for debate.”
Upon his departure, Amb. Haji recommended Deputy Ambassador Abshir Warsame Diirshe assume his responsibilities until a suitable replacement is appointed.
This unfolding crisis within the Somali government indicates the ongoing challenges of managing the country’s foreign affairs, particularly in maintaining diplomatic decorum and respect amongst its representatives.
