(04-05-23) BORAME – Tensions have risen in the Awdal region as Somaliland police forces opened fire on demonstrators protesting the killing of a Somaliland army soldier, Khadar Habeeb. The soldier was reportedly killed by an army officer in the town of Lawyacaddo, leading to widespread demonstrations and public anger throughout the region, particularly along the coast.
Protestors have been demanding justice for Khadar Habeeb and calling for the officer responsible to be held accountable. The situation escalated when demonstrators blocked the road connecting Dilla and Boorama, prompting police forces to fire upon the crowd.
One protester voiced their frustration, stating, “Khadar Habeeb Aynanshe, who was killed without a beard and without compensation yesterday, and who was killed unjustly, the road between Dilla and Borama will be closed if they are not followed before the sun sets.”
Another demonstrator declared, “The Awdal people have left, what Lasaanod has done is happening in Borama, and we will not tolerate it. We will not pray for Muse Bihi in Borama, it will be Gojacadde.”
The government of Somaliland and the regional administration have yet to release details about the killing, which is said to be related to a public land dispute. Reports indicate that the soldier responsible for the murder is currently in the custody of security forces and is incarcerated. The official reason for the killing of Khadar Habeeb, who was reportedly a soldier in the Somaliland army, particularly along the coast, remains unclear.
This incident marks a significant escalation of tensions in the region and highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Somaliland in maintaining peace and stability.
