(16-05-23) MOGADISHU – Sporadic fighting erupted near Garowe Airport and the eastern control area early on Tuesday morning, pitting forces tasked with escorting election materials for local council polls in the eastern regions against troops supporting Puntland’s opposition politicians.
The conflict, involving an array of weaponry, has resulted in both fatalities and injuries, although the exact number of casualties remains unknown at this time. The fighting commenced mere hours after Puntland’s opposition leaders called for the cancellation of the upcoming local council elections, citing potential political and security crises.
The local council elections in Puntland, slated for May 25th, have become a hotbed for political tensions in the region. The opposition’s call for the cancellation of the elections underscores the escalating political tension in the region, and the physical confrontation at Garowe Airport further highlights the precarious situation.
Said Mohamed, a senior officer in the forces safeguarding the election materials, expressed his concern over the unfolding situation. “We have a duty to ensure the safe transportation of these materials,” Mohamed said. “Our goal is to maintain security and enable the democratic process to proceed, but the current opposition actions are making this task increasingly challenging.”
Observers are closely monitoring the situation, concerned that the ongoing conflict might derail the electoral process, further destabilizing the region.
Omar Yusuf, an independent analyst based in Mogadishu, said, “The election in Puntland is more than a local affair. It is a test for Somalia’s commitment to democracy. The international community will be watching closely. If these clashes escalate or if the elections are postponed or cancelled, it could have far-reaching implications.”
The situation in Garowe remains fluid. As the forces continue to face off in the vicinity of the airport, local inhabitants and international onlookers alike are hoping for a quick resolution that can ensure the safety of all involved and the integrity of the upcoming elections.
