(15-06-23) MOGADISHU — Former President of Somalia, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, made a much-anticipated return to Mogadishu on Thursday, amid a torrent of political activity in the capital. Sheikh Sharif was met with a grand reception at Aden Adde International Airport, with a delegation of parliamentarians, senators, government officials and of intellectuals.

In an event held within the confines of the airport, Sheikh Sharif addressed the media, offering insights into his perspective on the country’s unfolding political landscape. The former leader of the transitional government emphasised the urgent need for collective discussions around the ongoing issues.

“Despite being abroad for a period, I have kept a close eye on the developments in our nation. It is crucial that we convene and deliberate over the events unfolding,” said Sheikh Sharif, who led the nation through a key transitional period.

The ex-president outlined his plans to rekindle political engagement aimed at surmounting the present challenges. He expressed his confidence in overcoming the current crisis through collective decision-making and widespread consultation.

“We have navigated through more trying times, and I am certain we will once again rise above these challenges. Through extensive dialogue and further sessions, we will find a way,” Sheikh Sharif iterated.

He went on to articulate the aspirations of the Somali populace, emphasising their desire for a just government, peace, and development that enables the nation to compete on a global stage.

Sharif has been a vocal critic of the National Consultative Council’s decisions concerning the country’s political direction, reflecting his continued commitment to advocating for the democratic rights of the Somali people.
