(23-06-23) BARAWE — In the wake of recent inter-security clashes, a delegation including the Federal Government’s Minister of Defence, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Armed Forces Liban Ali Yarow, Chairman of the Court of First Instance of the Armed Forces Colonel Hassan Ali Noor Shute, the Minister of Justice for the South West, the Governor of the Lower Shabelle Region, military officers, and other officials have made their presence known in the Barawe district of Lower Shabelle on Friday. The objective of their visit is to encourage resolution and ensure stability within the region.
This crucial visit follows a series of unfortunate events in Barawe, where regional forces and units of the federal military recently found themselves in a violent confrontation. The officials, during their stay, made a point of visiting the troops, expressing their solidarity and observing the daily lives of the local population.
The Minister of Defense of Somalia, whilst addressing the Barawe incident, unequivocally stated that the country has one common enemy: AlShabaab. He further iterated that any loss of life through the use of weapons purchased with the people’s tax money is completely unacceptable and against the fundamental principles of the country.
Several soldiers and military officers were interviewed by officials about the genesis of the recent violence in Barawe. The military court officials, in response, urged the troops to cooperate fully with the investigation, insisting on the need for no further violence in Barawe.
Minister of Defense Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur took the opportunity to encourage the military personnel to behave responsibly, urging them to refrain from any form of internal violence. He implored the military court authorities to expedite their investigation into the recent clashes so that justice could be timely served.
The city of Barawe experienced a wave of tension on June 12, as unexpected clashes broke out between the recently deployed Southwest State Dervishes and the pre-existing SNA. The incident sadly resulted in the loss of 10 soldiers’ lives and left numerous others injured.
