(13-06-23) MOGADISHU — At the ongoing summit of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Heads of State and Government, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud acknowledged the significant regional progress despite a myriad of challenges. He notably highlighted Somalia’s accomplishments in politics, state-building, and counter-terrorism.
President Hassan utilised the platform to call upon IGAD for support in lifting the arms embargo imposed on Somalia for over 30 years. The arms embargo has been a point of contention for the nation, which believes it impedes its efforts towards establishing a robust national security apparatus.
Moreover, the President advocated for investments based on resilience to address the impending crisis of climate change and safeguard the livelihoods of vulnerable communities. He emphasised the crucial role of such investments in ensuring sustainable development and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
The IGAD summit serves as a platform for member nations to discuss significant regional issues, and this call by President Hassan underscores the pressing needs of Somalia in its journey towards political and socio-economic development.
