(01-06-23) MOGADISHU — The Federal Republic of Somalia warmly welcomed the recent adoption of the Verification Report on its application to join the East African Community (EAC) on Thursday. This major step towards integration was reviewed and approved during the 21st Extraordinary Summit, held on Wednesday in Bujumbura, Burundi.

The adoption of the verification report is not just a noteworthy milestone for Somalia but a testament to its readiness and preparedness to join the ranks of EAC member states. This development comes as the country has been pushing for stronger regional ties and unity, as part of its efforts to promote prosperity and stability within East Africa.

“We see Somalia’s potential membership as a valuable addition to the East African Community sisterly nations, contributing to the region’s integration and prosperity,” said a Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Somali government expressed its profound appreciation for the confidence exhibited by the Summit concerning Somalia’s application. It also lauded the professionalism displayed by the EAC secretariat in handling the application process.

“We are grateful for the communiqué made public by the heads of state and General Secretariat of the East African Community,” the Statement stated. “We reaffirm our determination and aspiration to engage in fruitful negotiations that will expedite the EAC’s affirmation of our membership and our formal admission.”

This affirmation from the East African Community marks a significant stride for Somalia as it seeks to deepen its regional integration. By joining the EAC, Somalia would position itself in a strategic alliance, which includes Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi, bolstering economic growth and political stability in the process.
