(10-07-23) MOGADISHU – Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, presided over a meeting on Monday evening, discussing the progress of Somalia’s application to the East Africa Community (EAC). The meeting was attended by representatives from various government agencies and other key officials, who reviewed Somalia’s technical and economic preparedness for potential integration under the EAC umbrella.
PM Hamza emphasised the significant economic benefits that membership to the EAC could bring to Somalia, suggesting that it could facilitate investment and job creation for the Somali people. Moreover, he noted that EAC membership could grant Somalis the opportunity to access and exploit the extensive East African market, enabling them to sell their goods with relative ease.
Former Foreign Minister and Somalia’s envoy to the EAC, Abdisalan Hadliye, along with the Prime Minister’s economic development advisor, offered a comprehensive presentation at the meeting, detailing Somalia’s application process for EAC membership and the various stages it had traversed.
Commending the laudable work done by the officials involved, PM Hamza urged them to redouble their efforts to ensure that Somalia’s ambition to join the EAC is realised soon.
