(31/07/23) MOGADISHU – Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met with UNHCR Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Affey, on Monday. They discussed finding durable solutions to the pressing refugee and IDP issues in Somalia.
The Prime Minister and the UNHCR Ambassador highlighted the need to address the recurrent challenges faced by refugees and IDPs in the country, including a lack of access to basic services, protection, and livelihood opportunities.
PM Barre acknowledged UNHCR’s invaluable partnership and support for Somalia, with regard to ensuring the basic human rights of the refugees and IDP population. He also expressed his appreciation for the UN agency’s continued efforts to improve the living conditions of refugees and IDPs in the country.
On his part, Ambassador Affey commended the Somali government’s efforts in improving the security situation in the country, which would subsequently enhance the IDP and refugee protection status. He also reiterated UNHCR’s commitment to working with the Somali government to find durable solutions to refugee and IDP issues.
