(11-07-23) MOGADISHU – Former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed presided over a meeting on Tuesday evening in Mogadishu, setting the stage for tomorrow’s significant national conference. The President expressed gratitude for the support extended by the President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and optimism for a fruitful dialogue at tomorrow’s conference. The meeting involved influential former and current political leaders, including former Parliament Speaker Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden, ex-Prime Ministers Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gas, Omar Abdirashid, and Hassan Ali Khayre, former Deputy PM Ridwan Hirsi Mohamed, ex-Minister Abdinur Sheikh Mohamed, and MP Abdulqadir Cossoble Ali.
Wednesday’s consultative meeting, chaired by President Mohamud, will draw together present and former national leaders to address the pressing situation in Somalia. The two-day conference, a significant event in Somalia’s political landscape, aims to utilise the advice of past leaders to shape the nation’s trajectory. This strategy underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive and consultative nation-building.
This key conference will see the participation of the country’s past and present political leaders, including Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Speakers of the Parliament. This unprecedented gathering highlights the Somali government’s drive towards unity and progress, seeking to gather insights and create a consensus across the political divide, especially the NCC declaration in May.
The conference outcomes could prove instrumental in charting Somalia’s political and socio-economic future. It marks a transformative moment in Somalia’s journey, as leaders come together with shared responsibility and a common purpose, aiming to steer the nation towards stability and prosperity.
