(07/07/23) Mogadishu – The United Kingdom and the United Nations Offices have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, aiming to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Somalia. The agreement outlines the provision of additional funds for urgent, life-saving needs and was publicised by the UK embassy in Mogadishu on Friday.
The British Embassy in Mogadishu confirmed the UK’s commitment to providing $7 million in aid through the recently signed MoU. The document is drafted to tackle the immediate humanitarian needs of Somalia and solidify the UK’s efforts in supporting the Somali populace.
The UK Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis, took pride in extending further essential aid to Somalia’s most vulnerable communities. He stressed the profound impact targeted humanitarian assistance could have on regions severely hit by drought throughout Somalia and reasserted the UK’s steadfast support for the Somali nation and its people.
Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Mr George Conway, stated that an impending famine in Somalia has been averted due to the ramped-up humanitarian response. Yet, he warned that the crisis is far from over, as the level of urgent needs persists at an alarmingly high rate.
Mr Conway recognised the crucial role of the UK’s unyielding support, enabling their partners to sustain their life-saving efforts and uphold the significant progress made by the humanitarian community.
