(07-09-23) MOGADISHU — Military intelligence reports received on Thursday have confirmed the death of Dahir Hassan Mohamed, known as Dahir Iley. He was a prominent leader responsible for Zakat and extortion tax collections within the Al-Shabaab extremist group in East Galgaduud. The incident took place in the village of Haji Iman, governed by Eldher in the Galgaduud region.
Dahir Iley was assassinated by another Al-Shabaab leader, Isse Abdi Bare, who is also known as Isse Jejeeste. Bare operates in the Garabla area under the jurisdiction of the El-Bur district in Galgaduud. Sources indicate that Bare collaborated with other conspirators to execute the killing, casting doubts over the unity within Al-Shabaab’s ranks.
Following the incident, Isse Jejeeste was apprehended by Al-Shabaab and is currently being held in Galhareeri. The exact punitive measures against him remain unclear. However, experts suggest this internal strife may present an opportunity for the Somali National Army (SNA) to seize the initiative.
Recent advances by the SNA against Al-Shabaab have been noteworthy, especially in the Galmudug and Hirshabelle federal states. This internal rift within Al-Shabaab occurs amidst increasing pressures from both Somali and international military efforts. Analysts speculate that this could weaken Al-Shabaab’s hold on strategic regions, offering the Somali government and its allies an opportunity for greater control.
