(08-09-23) MOGADISHU — Ali Jeyte Osman, the former dismissed Governor of the Hiiraan region, revealed details on Friday of a significant agreement between President Hassan Sheikh and the leaders of the Hawadle community. The pact aims to escalate efforts against the Al-Shabaab terrorist group in the Mahaas district.
According to Osman, the agreement sharply focuses on a joint commitment to defeating Al-Shabaab, relegating other issues to the background for now. “The president has asked us to set aside all other concerns and focus on defeating the enemies of the country,” said Osman.
The accord signifies a united front against Al-Shabaab and aims to ease the recent tensions in Beledweyne, a city that has already been strained by leadership changes and divisions between the Hiiraan and Hir Shabelle communities.
Drawing from historical lessons, Osman pointed to Somalia’s victory against Ethiopia in the 1977 war as evidence of the nation’s resilience. “If we could triumph then, with fewer resources and a smaller population, there’s no reason we can’t defeat Al-Shabaab today,” he asserted.
The Hiiraan region has lately witnessed increased activity against Al-Shabaab, with the Hawadle community taking a leading role in the current offensive against the extremist group.
Osman concluded by calling for unity among all Somalis. “This war isn’t just for specific communities; it is needed for the benefit of all Somalis,” he emphasised.
The agreement is seen as a pivotal step toward fostering national unity and amplifying efforts to eradicate Al-Shabaab from both the Hirshabelle and Galmudug Federal States.
