(17 Apr 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Somalia’s largest telecom provider, Hormuud Telecom, has restated its market dominance and national commitment, following the entry of global satellite internet giant Starlink into the country.
In a statement released on Thursday, Hormuud underscored its mission to “connect and empower every Somali”, framing itself as a key player in the nation’s digital transformation. The company highlighted its role in expanding mobile money services, rural connectivity, and digital access across the education and enterprise sectors.
“Somalia’s connectivity story is gaining global attention, and that’s a positive sign for the future of our country,” the statement read. “We believe a healthy market is open, competitive, and committed to long-term development.”
The message comes days after the federal government officially licensed Starlink, operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, to provide satellite internet across Somalia, particularly in hard-to-reach rural areas.
While Starlink’s entry is seen as a major boost to the country’s digital ambitions, Hormuud’s statement serves as a reminder of its entrenched presence, deep local roots, and continued leadership in shaping Somalia’s tech-driven future.
