(10-09-23) MOGADISHU – Tensions run high in front of the Madina Gate of the highly secured Halane Camp in Mogadishu following a fatal altercation between a Somali-Swedish citizen and a Ugandan soldier serving in the ATMIS mission. The incident occurred on Sunday and has led to an escalated military presence in the area, resulting in a standstill on the road passing by the Aden Adde airport.
Reliable sources have told Halqabsi News that a dispute broke out between the Somali man, Yonis Ahmed Noor, 20, and a Ugandan ATMIS soldier, during the altercation, Mr. Noor stabbed the Ugandan soldier, who sustained serious injuries during this incident. Ugandan soldiers present retaliated, shooting Mr. Noor dead.
The relatives of the deceased Somali man have claimed that their son suffered from mental illness and had recently returned from Sweden. Intriguingly, officers investigating the case have speculated that Mr. Noor may have had affiliations with Al-Shabaab, although there is no official statement confirming this as yet.
As a result of the incident, security measures have been ramped up considerably. The area around the Halane Camp, known for hosting diplomatic missions, the United Nations and other international organisations, has been filled with a large influx of ATMIS and Somali troops.
Neither ATMIS nor the Somali government has issued an official statement regarding the incident, adding to the climate of uncertainty and tension. Halane Camp is widely considered one of the most secure areas in Somalia and is staffed by many Somali workers who commute daily through its checkpoints.
