(07-09-23) MOGADISHU — Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Salah Ahmed Jama, welcomed Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Dekeme Mekonnen and a delegation to the capital Mogadishu on Thursday, in a move aimed at bolstering ties and cooperation between the neighbouring nations.
The Ethiopian delegation’s visit focussed on strengthening relationships in trade, economic infrastructure, education and security. Jama underscored the importance of uniting to combat challenges, including the ongoing fight against extremist group al-Shabaab.
The meeting comes as the Somali cabinet approved agreements with Ethiopia and Turkey earlier Thursday, covering a range of areas including trade, defence and higher education.
Ethiopia maintains a substantial military presence in Somalia as part of the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and is a key ally in regional security efforts.
Both countries anticipate that the renewed commitment will enhance stability, economic development and improve cross-border relations. The agreements are considered a positive stride in advancing peace and economic growth in the East African region.
