(14-09-23) MOGADISHU — A Somali military court in Mogadishu on Thursday sentenced two men, Ahmed Hassan Bariyow and Adan Mohamed Qoslaye, on charges of participating in acts of violence and assassinations that have disrupted the nation’s security.
Bariyow and Qoslaye were convicted of acting as spies, scouting for targeted killings and inciting violence from the capital city of Mogadishu to Eelasha Bisha, an area situated outside the capital.
Bariyow, involved in terrorism since 2012, received a 15-year sentence in military prison. His accomplice, Qoslaye, who joined the extremist group in 2020, was sentenced to 5 years.
Both men were friends prior to their involvement in the extremist group and were known to be hashish addicts. Court documents revealed that Bariyow, a decade-long member of al-Shabaab, had influenced Qoslaye to join the organisation.
Last month, the same military court handed down sentences to a driver and five wives of al-Shabaab members, convicting them for roles in transporting explosives.
