(07-09-23) MOGADISHU — A mother and her two children were killed on Thursday when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in their home in Ceel-Lahelay, Galgudud region, recently liberated by Somali national forces from the Al-Shabaab militant group.
The incident occurred as the family returned to their residence from a camp for internally displaced persons. Two other civilians were injured in the blast and were promptly taken to hospital by the national armed forces.
The Somali government was quick to condemn the attack, labelling it a “cowardly act of terror.” Officials have vowed to intensify military operations until Al-Shabaab is eliminated. “We will not rest until these terrorists are rooted out from our land,” an official statement read. Residents have been urged to report any suspicious activities to authorities immediately.
In recent months, the Somali national army, in collaboration with local forces, has intensified its offensive against Al-Shabaab, liberating additional territories in the Galgudud and Mudug regions.
