(08-09-23) MOGADISHU — Newly trained police officers were deployed in Mogadishu on Thursday, receiving state-of-the-art hardware as part of a wider initiative to improve security across the city. Overseen by the Somali government, this new deployment is part of a comprehensive programme focused on eliminating drug use within the security forces.
Mahdi Cumar Muumin, the Chief of the General Police of Banadir Region, emphasised the rigorous anti-drug policies that the new force adheres to. “In this force, there is not one person who uses drugs. You are required to maintain this standard,” he told officers during a briefing.
Community engagement and protection stand as central tenets of the new police force. “You must work alongside the community and protect them,” said Muumin, highlighting the government’s broader, more holistic approach to law enforcement and public safety.
Discipline and adherence to the law were stressed by the commander of the Somali Police Force. “You are here to serve the Somali people, who need your help. You must refrain from any actions that compromise peace and adhere strictly to the rules you’ve been taught,” he said.
This new deployment adds significant reinforcement to ongoing police efforts, which have already contributed to stabilising conditions in Mogadishu. The new officers are expected to play a key role in future operations aimed at securing both the capital and its outlying areas.
