(26-09-23) MINNESOTA — Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre held a special meeting with religious scholars of the Somali Diaspora in Minnesota, USA, on Sunday. Sheikh Abdirahman Sherif, a participant in the gathering, said they addressed three central topics: the scholars’ involvement in the war against Al-Shabaab, the need for the scholars to help organise fundraisings to support the reconstruction and establishment of essential services in newly freed areas, and their commitment to bolstering religious consciousness in line with the religious assembly held in Mogadishu earlier this year that condemned Al-Shabaab.
Mr. Sherif highlighted that Somali religious scholars in North America are uniquely positioned with advantages not shared by their peers in Somalia. These include safety, advanced technological usage, and broader information access, setting them on favourable grounds for an ideological war against Al-Shabaab. The Somali government’s persistent fight against Al-Shabaab spans several dimensions, encompassing military, financial, and ideological strategies.
