(13-09-23) MOGADISHU — The Somali National Army, in collaboration with local residents, is intensifying mine detection operations in El-Garas district and its surrounding areas, government security officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The urgency of the initiative was highlighted after a resident was injured in a mine explosion while fetching water outside El-Garas, bringing the safety of the local community into sharp focus.
The operation aims to clear territories recently liberated from the extremist group Al-Shabaab of any landmines, preparing these areas for the safe return of local residents.
“Clearing the mines is not just about physical safety, but also crucial for the psychological well-being of returning communities,” stated Col. Ahmed Hashi.
This operation symbolises the collaborative efforts between local and federal entities, aiming to reestablish peace and stability in Hirshabelle and Galmudug regions after experiencing a decade-long rule by Al-Shabaab.
