(20-09-23) MOGADISHU — The Somali National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), in collaboration with federal and regional authorities, on Wednesday announced a strict ban on the sale or redistribution of humanitarian aid. This action comes on the heels of the European Union suspending funding to the World Food Programme in Somalia, following a U.N. investigation into widespread aid misuse.
In a joint statement, the agencies emphasised the need for aid to reach vulnerable communities and warned that violations of the ban would result in immediate legal consequences. Despite distancing itself from allegations of embezzlement, the Somali government is urging all humanitarian workers to maintain strict standards of integrity.
This prohibition not only stresses the government’s efforts to tackle discrepancies in aid distribution but also adds a layer of complexity to ongoing humanitarian operations. The directive could potentially influence international donor relationships, as Somalia continues to navigate its persistent crisis situation.
