(26-09-23) DHUSAMAREB — Two Al-Shabaab militants, Hassan Hussein Ali, known as Mohamed Deq within Al-Shabaab circles, and Derow Moallin Ibrahim “Idris”, have surrendered to the government and local forces in the Harardheere district of the Mudug region. The Ministry of Defence reports that the two cited intolerable conditions arising from the government’s offensive as their reason for surrender. The ministry further stated that the current offensive underscores the effectiveness of the SNA’s strategy, compelling many militants to opt for disarmament.
These latest surrenders augment a growing trend of Al-Shabaab defections witnessed over recent months, primarily attributed to escalated operations against the group. Defections have been particularly high in the Galgaduud, Hiiraan, Mudug, and South West regions.
