(30-10-23) GARBAHAREY — At least two lives have been lost and multiple people injured due to flash floods in Grabaharey district, Gedo Region, as confirmed by Governor Iman Adow Kaarshe. Vital transport bridges in the district have been compromised as a result of the ongoing downpour.
Speaking to Kulmiye Radio on Monday, the governor confirmed the casualties but provided no details on current relief efforts. “Local authorities are in the process of aiding the injured, and burial preparations for the two deceased men are underway,” said Adow.
The persistent rains have worsened an already challenging situation, hitting low-income families in the region especially hard.
The adverse weather arrives following alerts from both the federal government and Jubbaland state authorities regarding expected heavy rains and the potential El Nino event. These warnings were primarily aimed at Somalia’s coastal regions and areas adjacent to streams and rivers.
