(28-10-23) MOGADISHU — A sequence of explosions rocked the districts of Dayniile and Hamar Jajab in the Somali capital of Mogadishu Friday evening, further undermining confidence in the city’s already shaky security landscape.
The first explosion involved a hand grenade being thrown at a military vehicle at El-Gaabta intersection. Two people within the vehicle sustained injuries. Perpetrators of the attack managed to escape and remain at large.
Shortly after, a second blast occurred in a residence belonging to the head of a department within the administration of Dayniile district, part of the greater Banadir region. Military officials who inspected the scene reported no casualties, although the house was heavily damaged.
The incidents come amidst a backdrop of increasing attacks, many of which are attributed to the Al-Shabaab extremist group. The group has been responsible for a series of planned killings and explosions, further destabilising the capital.
Public sentiment is increasingly critical of the local security agencies’ inability to counteract the escalating threats. Calls are growing for immediate intervention from both the Somali government and international partners to address the deteriorating security situation.
