(26-10-23) BRUSSELS — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia laid out his government’s achievements Thursday, including significant strides in combating Al Shabaab militants and converting humanitarian aid into long-term development initiatives.
Addressing a gathering of leaders and representatives at the EU and emerging countries meeting in Brussels, Mohamud praised Somali security forces for liberating more than 80 districts since July 2022. He spotlighted the return of education to previously militant-held areas, such as the coastal city of Harardheere, where schools and teaching staff have been revitalised.
“Somali children now have a renewed chance for a bright, hopeful future,” Mohamud said, framing the advancement in education as a cornerstone for progress.
The president expressed gratitude to the European Union for its ongoing support and partnership. He affirmed Somalia’s dedication to the principles of democracy, human rights, and good governance.
The meeting in Brussels dealt with a range of global challenges, including climate change, migration, and security issues. Mohamud’s remarks offered a compelling snapshot of Somalia’s developmental and security landscape, positioning the nation as an emerging partner committed to stability and growth.
