(11-10-23) GAROWE— On Wednesday, Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni named a new Minister for Security and DDR (Disarmament, Demobilisation, and Reintegration). In a decree issued on 11 October, President Deni designated Ibrahim Artan Ismail “Haji Bakin” to the post. The decision was taken after consultations with the Deputy Minister and based on Ismail’s academic background, competence, and professional experience.
This move follows President Deni’s return to Garowe after an extended trip that covered the UAE, Ethiopia, and Kenya. As regional elections approach, the president is facing stiff challenges from opposition groups, who are now camped in Garowe and exerting pressure on his administration to hold presidential elections upon his mandate expiry in early January 2024.
