(08-10-23) ROME — Speaker of the House of Representatives of Somalia, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, arrived in Rome, Italy, Sunday for high-level talks aimed at fostering bilateral ties.
Madobe and his delegation were welcomed following an official invitation from the Speaker of the Italian Parliament. The trip is set to include a series of meetings with Italian leaders, where discussions will focus on governance, regional stability, and the ongoing fight against extremist group Al-Shabaab in Galmudug and Hirshabelle federal member states of Somalia.
The Speaker plans to brief Italian officials on the current situation in Somalia and will seek Italian support for the Somali Parliament. Madobe aims to establish a regular cooperation mechanism between the Somali and Italian legislative bodies, underscoring the significance of enhanced diplomatic relations between the two historic countries.
The high-profile visit comes after Somali President Hassan Sheikh departed for Eritrea earlier on Sunday for talks with the Eritrean president, marking a series of international engagements by Somali officials.
Observers say the back-to-back diplomatic trips indicate Somalia’s commitment to building international partnerships and obtaining foreign support in its efforts against insurgency and for government reforms.
