(24-10-23) MOGADISHU — The Federal Government of Somalia, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), successfully repatriated 99 Somali nationals from Libyan prisons, officials announced on Tuesday.
Special envoy for immigration and children’s rights, Mary Yassin Jama, along with Raage Osman, Director of the Arab Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, greeted the returnees at Mogadishu airport.
Of the 99 returnees, 88 were men and 11 were women. Osman told reporters that 47 were sent to Hargeisa while the remaining 52 arrived in Mogadishu. He expressed gratitude towards President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, the IOM, and the Somali Embassy in Libya for their roles in the operation.
“Believe in your country,” Osman advised young Somalis contemplating migration, urging them to learn from the experiences of the recently repatriated citizens. Osman also revealed that additional Somalis are currently stranded in Libyan detention centres, with hopes for their return in the near future.
