(12/11/23) MOGADISHU – The Armed Forces Court of Somalia on Sunday sentenced 11 individuals for their connections with the Al-Shabaab terrorist group. This ruling underscores Somalia’s commitment to combating extremism and maintaining national security.
Abdirahin Mohamed Osman Jimale, also known as Maruf, faced arrest on June 14 at Bakara market by the National Security Agency. His conviction comes after evidence was found on his computer linking him to key Al-Shabaab figures. Maruf played a pivotal role in disseminating information to the group’s members in various districts, including Dayniile, Yaaqshid, Hilwaa, Hodan, and Hawl-Wadaag.
Sharif Nur Ali Adan Ayaanle, nicknamed Sharif Owliyoo, once the chairman of the October department in Hodan District, received an eight-year military prison sentence for passing information to Al-Shabaab operatives within the government.
Gabriel Abdullahi Ali Adow, known as Sheikha, was also sentenced to eight years for his involvement in the group’s propaganda activities and his role as a spy in Mogadishu.
Abdi Ali Ibaar Wardheere, or Tabliq, was given a five-year sentence for his leadership in the Khawarij Department of Information Submission and for transmitting details about bombings in the Darussalam and Arafaad areas.
Anab Hussein Omar Fidow, who relayed information about the Hodon District and supported Al-Shabaab on social media, particularly Facebook, was sentenced to a year in military prison.
Four other group members were sentenced to three years each: Awil Jama Abdulle Hireey, Rahma Abdishakour Ali Mumin (Sandhere), Mohamud Ahmed Siad Barre (muscle), and Sharma’arke Musa Ismail Araale.
However, Asili Mohamed Dhicisow Farah and Hassan Mohamed Ibrahim (Hasan Kacan) were acquitted of all charges and released.
General Hassan Ali Noor Shute, chairman of the Court of First Instance of the Armed Forces, communicated the verdicts, signalling a robust response by the Somali government in its ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and ensure national security.
