(28-11-23) MOGADISHU – Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre of the Federal Government of Somalia, accompanied by Ambassador Ibrahim M. Yagli of Turkey, Ambassador FEI Shengchao of China, and representatives from the United Nations Mission, embarked on a visit to flood-ravaged regions to assess the extensive devastation caused by unrelenting rains and flooding in Jubaland on the outskirts of Kismayo on Tuesday.
The visit commenced with Prime Minister Barre expressing his heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Yagli, Ambassador Shengchao, and the UN Mission for their swift response in visiting the affected areas. Standing amidst the floodwaters, he underscored the urgency of the situation, emphasising that the true tragedy lay in the thousands of families still marooned in submerged areas, in dire need of rescue and assistance. The Prime Minister soberly acknowledged the severity of the crisis, one that has overwhelmed the capacity of local authorities. He called upon the international community to take immediate and decisive action to address this pressing emergency.
Following the on-site inspection, Prime Minister Barre convened a meeting with Ambassador Yagli, Ambassador Shengchao, and representatives from aid agencies who participated in the assessment. The primary objective of this meeting was to consolidate efforts and resources to provide aid and relief to those adversely affected by the relentless downpours in the country.
