(18/11/23) MOGADISHU – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud presided over a meeting of the National Security Committee today. As the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Hassan Sheikh’s leadership was pivotal in addressing key security issues facing Somalia.
The meeting’s agenda was comprehensive, encompassing the ongoing efforts to ensure the security of the capital city Mogadishu and the broader aim of reconstructing the national army. One of the main topics was the ongoing campaign to liberate areas still under the control of terrorist groups, a crucial step in restoring peace and stability in the country.
The committee focused on reinforcing the security of Mogadishu, the nation’s capital, while also delving into strategies for rebuilding the national army. A key highlight was the robust campaign against terrorist groups, a cornerstone in Somalia’s journey towards enduring peace and stability.
Significantly, the agenda included detailed plans for an upcoming landmark security conference, set to be co-organised by the Federal Government of Somalia, the United Nations, and the African Union. This conference is anticipated to be a critical forum for formulating cohesive strategies on national and regional security issues.
“In these challenging times, the collaboration between our citizens and security agencies has been instrumental in safeguarding Mogadishu,” said a Commander of the Armed Forces during the meeting. The Police Force, trained to military standards, was especially lauded for their relentless efforts in ensuring round-the-clock security.
Comprising key figures including the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Ministers of Defence, Internal Security, Interior, the Commander of the National Armed Forces, the Director of the National Intelligence Agency, and other senior officials, the Committee celebrated the first phase of successful operations. The liberation of territories in Mudug, Galgudud, Hiraan, and Middle Shabelle from the terrorist group Al-Shabaab marked a pivotal moment in the nation’s security narrative.
“The completion of this first phase against Al-Shabaab in Hirshabelle and Galmudug is not just a victory on the battlefield; it symbolises our collective resilience and commitment to peace,” affirmed President Hassan Sheikh in his closing remarks.
President Hassan Sheikh’s leadership in this meeting reflects a strong commitment to securing the nation and combating terrorism, reaffirming Somalia’s resolve to face its security challenges head-on.
