(28-11-23) MOGADISHU – The Council of the European Union has approved a €1 million assistance package for the Somali National Army (SNA), as part of its European Peace Facility initiative. Announced on Monday, this financial aid is directed towards enhancing the SNA’s operational capacity, in collaboration with the European Union Training Mission in Somalia.
The Somali Ministry of Defense on Tuesday welcomed the EU Council’s decision, stating, “This support will advance the training and equipping of forces at General Dhagabadan Training Center. We appreciate the EU’s continued support to the SNAF to assume full responsibility for security operations in Somalia and acknowledge the importance of the EPF packages of support over the years to enhance the SNAF capabilities.”
The funding is expected to substantially enhance the training facilities at the General Dhagabadan Training Centre. The EU’s contribution includes military equipment and ammunition, earmarked strictly for training purposes, adhering to international human rights law and international humanitarian law. In addition to this latest support, the EU has provided the SNA with €69 million in equipment and supplies since 2019.
