(02/11/23) MOGADISHU — A Somali military court on Thursday delivered a series of sentences to General Shegow Ahmed Ali and his associates, following their engagement in a violent altercation in the Kaawo Godey area of Dharkenley district on 19 August. The clash resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including three Military Police members and one civilian, and left several others injured.
Ahmed Mohamed Hassan (Abi Ahmed), leader of the Shegow group, received a sentence for his role in a prior incident on 11 February, in which he killed Abdifitah Abdullahi Ali and Mohamed Ismail Hassan during a court session in Jowhar. Hassan was also implicated in an attack by security forces on Shegow’s group, subsequently seeking refuge with Shegow.
General Shegow Ahmed Ali, commander of the group, was sentenced to pay compensation for the death and injuries caused, as well as to serve 10 years in military prison. This judgement follows his involvement in the 19 August incident, which notably left Sakarye Mohamed Ali of the security forces severely injured.
Eighteen members of Shegow’s group were sentenced to six years in military prison and ordered to pay compensation to the deceased, Abdi Ahmed Shiraar and Ahmed Hassan Ahmed, as well as to the six injured soldiers.
Hassan Ali Mohamud and Saleeban Ahmed Ali Nur Bardees, identified as the instigators of the violence through robbery, received five-year sentences in military prison and were ordered to return the stolen mobile phones.
Mohammed Abdi Deqow, identified as the financier of the group with alleged links to black dollar printing activities, was sentenced to three years in military prison.
General Hassan Ali Nur Shute, chairman of the Court of First Instance of the Armed Forces, communicated the court’s decisions to the media, emphasising the convicts’ right to appeal.
