(05-12-23) MOGADISHU (HN) — Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) last month mandated the installation of CCTV cameras outside businesses in the capital, Mogadishu. This directive, aimed at tracing illicit activities, has sparked a perilous response from the Al-Shabaab terrorist group in Mogadishu.
Numerous traders in Mogadishu have complied with the government’s order, fitting surveillance cameras around their premises. This action, however, has antagonised terrorist factions, who perceive the measure as a direct challenge to their stronghold in the city. In retaliation, these groups have targeted business owners who followed the government’s instructions, with reported incidents of violence and explosions.
The terrorists’ actions send a dire warning to the residents of Mogadishu, suggesting severe consequences for defying their mandates. Despite these threats, several businesses continue to stand with the government’s initiative, a move viewed as a critical test in the ongoing battle against terrorism. A failure of the terrorists to halt the installation of these cameras could mark advancement in bolstering the capital’s security.
The steadfast stance of the NISA reflects the current government’s resolve in tackling terrorism. The policy not only aims to enhance security but also disrupts the operations of smaller terrorist cells lurking within the city.
In recent times, Mogadishu’s residents have seen an improvement in their circumstances, yet the threat of terrorism remains. Terrorists aim to revert the city to its previous state of unrest. The government calls for a unified stand from the capital’s residents against terrorism, supporting state initiatives that promote public safety.
