(24-12-23) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Somali security forces have initiated a controversial operation in Mogadishu, focusing on traditional attire. Men wearing turbans and women in face-covering veils are the primary targets of this new campaign, sparking concerns among the capital’s residents.
In the last 24 hours, the military has been visibly enforcing these measures. An elder from Mogadishu expressed his reservations: “The turban is an old man’s honour. Without it, our elders lose their esteem.” Additionally, a young woman appealed to the government via Dalsan TV, urging them to allow the wearing of veils.
These operations, aimed at enhancing security in a city that has seen a reduction in explosions, are now raising questions about cultural sensitivity and personal freedoms. The situation remains under close observation as Mogadishu grapples with balancing security needs and cultural traditions.
