Hussein Macallin Mohamud, the National Security Advisor to the President, has confirmed this strategic handover. This development forms a crucial part of a wider plan designed to enable the Somali Army to take on full national security responsibilities, transitioning from the longstanding reliance on ATMIS forces.
Halqabsi News reports that the Presidential Guard and Special Police Units, having undergone intensive training in Serbia back in April under the supervision of Mohamed Abdullahi, the Somali Ambassador to Serbia, are ready to assume responsibility for Villa Somalia’s security. This marks the end of a foreign military presence in the Presidential offices that has been ongoing since 2007.
As part of a carefully orchestrated strategy, ATMIS has been gradually repositioning its forces, moving military bases to various regions within Somalia. This aligns with ATMIS’s planned gradual withdrawal from the country, aiming for completion by the end of 2024.
