(15-12-23) KAMPALA (HN) — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, alongside a delegation, touched down in Kampala on Thursday to participate in an event to mark Somalia’s official entry into the East African Community (EAC) regional cooperation organization. The ceremony, slated for today, symbolizes Somalia’s commitment to forging stronger ties with its East African counterparts.
Having joined the EAC last November, Somalia now stands as the 8th member of this regional organisation. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, presiding over the 23rd Round of Leaders of EAC countries, assumed the seat of the Republic of Somalia, solidifying the nation’s position within this collaborative framework.
The inclusion in the EAC holds significant promise for the Somali people, opening doors to international markets, business opportunities, and streamlining travel across borders. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud commended Somali experts and diplomats for their unwavering efforts in persuading member countries to embrace Somalia’s request.
In a statement, President Mohamud expressed his honour and optimism, stating, “Today marks a historic chapter in Somalia. Standing before you is a profound honour as we officially become members of the East African Community. This move encapsulates not only our vision but signals a promising future, teeming with opportunities and capabilities for our society.”
