(23-12-23) LAS ANOD (Halqabsi News) — The Supreme Council of SSC-Khaatumo, representing the northern Somali regions of Sool, Sanag, and Cayn, declared on Saturday their detachment from the semi-autonomous state of Puntland. This announcement, made in Las Anod, draws a shift in the region’s political alignment.
In a firm stance, the Council barred any SSC-Khaatumo candidate from running for Puntland’s vice presidency and demanded the resignation of their representatives on Puntland’s parliamentary committee. The Council also declined to appoint lawmakers to Puntland’s regional parliament, emphasising a move towards self-governance.
Garad Jama Garad Ali, the traditional clan chief, reinforced the community’s commitment to an independent administration, aligning with the Somali Federal Republic, separate from Puntland and Somaliland.
This decision follows escalating conflicts in the area, notably between Somaliland forces and SSC-Khaatumo troops in Las Anod, resulting in numerous casualties and displacements. The split represents a key moment in the region’s political journey and could significantly impact Somali regional dynamics.
