(29-01-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — In an exhilarating conclusion to the annual Inter-State Championship, Galmudug State emerged victorious, marking a historic moment in Somali football. The intense final, held on Monday at Mogadishu Stadium, saw Galmudug triumph over Hirshabelle State with a 4-1 victory in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw at full-time. This win signifies Galmudug State’s first title in this highly esteemed competition.
The tournament, featuring teams from various Federal Member States, experienced notable absences and controversies. Puntland withdrew from this year’s championship, citing a political disagreement with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Additionally, Southwest State exited the tournament after their players were attacked post-defeat by Galmudug.
Despite these challenges, the final match attracted massive crowds, with hundreds of thousands of fans flocking to the stadium, and millions of others tuning in via live broadcasts. Security measures were greatly ramped up, with a substantial number of police officers deployed to ensure the safety of both players and spectators.
President Mohamud applauded Galmudug State for their impressive performance and acknowledged the Somali Football Federation for efficiently organizing the event. He also recognized the crucial role of the security forces in maintaining a secure atmosphere throughout the tournament.
