(03-01-24) GAROWE (Halqabsi News) — The race for the Speaker of the Puntland Parliament is reaching a crescendo in Garowe, the administrative capital city of Puntland. The election for the Speaker of the House of Representatives is set for this coming Thursday, 4 January 2024. Three notable candidates have shown interest in the parliamentary leadership role, with their respective campaigns escalating in fervour over the past few hours.
The trio contending for the honour of serving as Speaker of the Puntland House of Representatives are namely Abdirazak Ahmed Said, Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril, and Mursal Mohamud Abdi.
Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril has presided over the fifth Puntland’s Parliament for the last four years, a recently concluded term.
Mursal Mohamud Abdi, another prominent candidate, currently serves as the Vice-Chairman of the Puntland Non-State Actors Association (PUNSAA), embodying the collective voice of Puntland’s civil society.
Lastly, Abdirisaq Ahmed Said is recognised for his past leadership as the Chairman of Puntland’s Transitional Electoral Commission (TPEC), a role that underscored his commitment to the region’s electoral integrity.
