(05-01-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Guled Bihi, a member of Somalia’s Federal Parliament representing Somaliland, on Friday raised serious concerns about the agreement signed by Muse in Ethiopia on Monday, questioning its legal standing and the lack of support from various local and international political, religious, and social groups.
In a statement, Bihi underlined the potential repercussions of Ethiopian troops crossing the Somali border, suggesting this could ignite resistance from nationalist and religious groups. He cautioned against underestimating the response, predicting that the youth might rally behind these groups, further complicating the situation.
The MP also expressed apprehension about the cultural and societal impacts of Ethiopian presence in Somali residential areas. He alluded to fears of negative influences arising from establishing Ethiopian churches, wine bars, and other businesses, raising ethical and moral concerns.
Further, Bihi questioned the wisdom of allowing a much more powerful Ethiopia to maintain a 20km inland military presence. He expressed scepticism about Somalia’s ability to enforce the terms of the agreement should Ethiopia choose to overstep its bounds.
Lastly, Bihi warned of the broader geopolitical implications of offering a military base to a foreign power. He argued that this could drag Somalia into larger conflicts in the Red Sea region, turning the country into a battleground for major governments and diverse groups.
The MP’s statement reflects growing unease within the Somali political landscape about the potential consequences of Muse’s agreement with Ethiopia domestically and in the broader regional context.
