(04-01-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The United Kingdom, along with other global powers and organizations, has underscored its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. This international solidarity follows the controversial pact between Ethiopia and the self-declared autonomous region of Somaliland.

The British Embassy in Mogadishu on Thursday issued a statement expressing grave concerns about the growing regional strife. “The UK is deeply troubled by the escalating tensions in the Horn of Africa and reaffirms its steadfast respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia. We call for restraint and urge a peaceful resolution through dialogue,” the embassy remarked.

Central to the dispute is an accord inked on January 1, 2024, where Somaliland agreed to lease a 20-kilometre maritime channel to Ethiopia for a 50-year tenure in exchange for diplomatic recognition. Ethiopia’s official confirmation of recognizing Somaliland remains pending, and the deal was struck without the Somali government’s knowledge or consent, igniting widespread disapproval.

Echoing the UK’s stance, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry highlighted their commitment to Somalia’s unity and independence. “The Memorandum of Understanding between Ethiopia and Somaliland, signed without the Somali government’s approval, is a cause for concern. This aligns with the tenets of international law,” the Turkish statement declared.

The global response has largely favoured Somalia’s position. Key international bodies and nations, including the European Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Arab League, and the United States, have opposed the Ethiopia-Somaliland agreement, viewing it as a breach of Somali sovereignty.

Additionally, the Islamic Organisation, Arab League, Egypt, Qatar, the US, and Sudan have all reiterated their support for Somalia’s territorial integrity. This widespread international backing underscores the complexity of the geopolitical dynamics in the Horn of Africa and the importance of maintaining stability and respect for established national borders.

The Somali government has condemned the agreement as a violation of its national integrity and unity, leading to the withdrawal of its ambassador to Ethiopia. This move reflects Mogadishu’s serious concerns about the regional developments and their potential impact on Somalia’s future stability.

With tensions continuing to escalate, the international community’s emphasis on dialogue and moderation becomes increasingly critical. The situation in the Horn of Africa remains precarious, with the potential for extensive consequences based on the unfolding events in the upcoming weeks and months.
