(13-02-24) BOSASO (Halqabsi News) — In a major security operation carried out over the last two nights, Bosaso authorities have deported hundreds of Ethiopian migrants, predominantly from the Oromo ethnic group, officials confirmed Tuesday. The deportations come in response to a resurgence of insecurity in the city, manifested through a series of murders and explosions.
The Bosaso officials have described the deportations as an essential response to the escalating violence in the city, a key port on Somalia’s coast. The operation targeted migrants accused of contributing to the local insecurity, with some detainees currently under investigation for possible connections to factions disrupting peace in the area.
Historically, Bosaso has attracted migrants looking for employment opportunities or transit to Gulf countries via the Red Sea. Nonetheless, the recent uptick in violence has compelled authorities to take decisive action to ensure peace and order.
Human rights groups have expressed significant concern over the deportations, indicating they might breach international laws designed to protect refugees and asylum seekers. Many of the Ethiopians deported have reported fleeing persecution and conflict in their homeland, seeking safety in Somalia.
