(18-02-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — A military court in Mogadishu has handed down death sentences to two former soldiers for their involvement in a roadblocking incident that led to two fatalities and several injuries. The court’s decision, announced on Monday, draws the culmination of months-long investigations into the tragic events that unfolded in the Mahaa Said village, Adalle district of the Middle Shabelle region, on 21 August 2023.
Former soldiers Arwaah Ibrahim Ahmed and Mohamed Sharif Roble Mohamud, who were absent from the proceedings, have been sentenced to death for their roles in the deaths of Abdullahi Mohamed Ga’al and Shukri Ahmed Weheliye. The court also ordered them to pay restitution for the injuries inflicted upon Kaaho Abdulle Addow and Guled Ibrahim Hilowle, as well as for the damages to a car owned by Adan Abdi Osman.
Additionally, Ahmed Ibrahim Ahmed and Abshir Ahmed Hassan Abdi Jalaf, also absent, have been convicted of aiding and abetting the crime, including attempted robbery, and sentenced to five years in military prison. The pair were identified as the drivers of two Fekon motorcycles at the scene of the crime.
The verdict follows the surrender of Arwaah Ibrahim Ahmed to Justice authority on 25 August 2023, with Ahmed Ibrahim Ahmed surrendering later on 26 November 2023. The Military Court’s decision comes after the Prosecution Office’s request to conclude the case was approved on 13 January this year.
Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Ali Nur Shuute, chairman of the Court of First Instance of the Armed Forces, stressed the court’s commitment to justice, emphasising the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
