(04-02-24) RIYADH (Halqabsi News) — Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, the Defence Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, participated in the second meeting of defence ministers from the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) member states, focusing on “Combating Terrorism.” The gathering, held in Saudi Arabia’s capital on Sunday, provided a platform for sharing insights and strategies against terrorism.
In a statement from the Ministry of Defence, Nur underlined Somalia’s progress in its battle against terrorism and expressed concerns over Ethiopia’s actions, which he said violated Somalia’s sovereignty and posed a threat to peace in the Horn of Africa region. He specifically condemned the controversial sea agreement with Ethiopia, calling it a breach of international law and a threat to neighbourly relations.
During the conference, Nur’s remarks on Ethiopia’s “blatant violation of international law” drew attention to the simmering tensions that could potentially destabilise the already volatile region. The minister’s candid discussion stressed Somalia’s efforts to safeguard its territorial integrity against external infringements.
The meeting in Riyadh, attended by defence ministers from across the Islamic world, aimed to foster cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Nur’s participation and the issues he raised reflect the complexities facing Somalia and its neighbours in ensuring regional security and respecting sovereign rights.
The IMCTC’s Riyadh meeting comes at a critical time when member states are seeking to strengthen their resolve against terrorism while navigating geopolitical challenges that could impact the collective security and stability of the region.
